Knowledge of Culture

Before March 1, 2012, If you were to ask me, "What is culture"? My answer would be as simples as "Culture is History". To learn and understand terms such as material culture, non-material culture, sub-culture and  counter-culture has really broaden my knowledge. You can discuss "things" in everyday life but to give your actual thoughts and opinions a label kind of changes things.

Sub-culture and Counter-culture really stood out to me in our class discussion. I've never really thought of myself flip flopping from being apart of a sub-culture to a counter-culture and vise verse. This really allows me to take a look into my place in our society.

I love Sociology!

  1. I was also unaware at first of how many factors come into play when identifying certain cultures. This chapter helped to broad my understanding of these concepts.

  2. There are so many things that make cultures vary from one to the other. I was previously under the impression that culture is a persons ethnicity but I now know that it is so much more than that. There are so many factors that define what culture is and it is more in depth than I thought.

  3. I have many associates from different cultures, it was not until the dicussion in class last week that many who have the same cultural background don't follow the same tradition or believe. It all comes back to what you grow up knowing take the Jehova Witness, and the KKK. It all makes you dig deep to get a better understanding what each culture really means.

  6. In my opinion, the person's culture is comprised of different views and values which formed as a result of upbringing and education that this person received over time.
The education includes knowledge obtained in the family, at school and in the society surrounding you.
The level of the person's culture is determined by the environment in which he or she grew up.
The culture of the people is influenced by the country where they live and by the time period.

  7. In this entry you have made some great points. Before, I entered this class I did. Ot see culture as something so important. Now, that I have taken to class I see how important culture is because of the simple fact that we are all different and our culture somewhat tell something about us.
